STARSPINNER II: Last Man Standing

Chapter 1
Trans/Space Port Station Eight

I heard the call unit dinging and made it part of an uneasy dream, but when the sound wouldn't stop I opened my eyes and squinted at my time disk. 05:00? Who the hell wanted to talk to me at 05:00? I'd worked my evening ten and had only been asleep four hours.

Yet, it couldn't be ignored. "Okay," I muttered. "Okay. This better be good." I rolled off the sleepboard and groped my way across the floor to the unit. "Marlow here. What is it and it better be - " Major Syl Hank appeared on the screen. "Marlow," her voice was sharp, "I'm on my way in. We'll dock in twenty minutes. Meet me. We have to talk."

I rubbed my head, trying to clear it. "We do?"

"Yes."

"All right. I'll be there."

If it had been anyonse else I'd have gone back to bed, but there wasn't much I wouldn't do for Syl, and we both knew it.
